dance like no one is watching || create + perform site-specific dance improv ||
il Giardino Artistic Farm, Rotello, Italy ||
in-person, || June 30 – July 5, 2021
The focus of the week is to experiment with making and performing site-specific improvised dance in landscape and architecture.
Each day will feature a morning warm-up that activates the body and solo sourcing improv body-brain. This is a space for experimentation, collaboration, to get feedback, to work on an idea, to explore. The afternoons will feature a score that participants can follow if they want, or self-direct.
We’ll make this time what we want.
What it is:
A countryside retreat.
All meals provided with local produce, olive oil, wine, cheese, pasta.
Shared accommodation.
An olive grove.
Hammocks under the trees.
What is possible:
- Daily physical warm-up and improv training
- Vocal practice
- Creation of solo work in relation to the land and place
- Group improv scores for practice and performance
- Creating small dancefilms
- Dance parties under the stars
- Screening of films under the stars
- Promenade performance for local audience
Based on Meagan O’Shea’s ongoing ‘dance like no one is watching’ improv performance project, this is 6 day live-in workshop in the Italian countryside for dancers, movers, physical performers with an advanced or professional practice.
Together we’ll design the activity that we need. There’ll be plenty of time for rest in the hammocks under the trees or at the beach.
The frame work is improvisation as a system for sourcing material, responding to place, improvised performance and creating collaboratively. Activating solo body, group kinesphere and ensemble thinking, this workshop hones skills for life and art.
Working on an outdoor stage and in the olive grove, the program includes physical and improvisation training and exploring creating and performance with sourced material in the landscape. We'll hone our group collaboration and physical listening skills and together we will create site responsive performance in the olive grove and medieval ruins of il Giardino Artistic Farm.
The week culminates in a promenade performance and picnic, where local public are invited to walk through the olive grove and discover dance along the way.
Participants will be required to take a Covid-19 test prior to travel or show a vaccine certificate. This way we will be able to live and work together for the week.

About Stand Up Molise
An idea to foster creative and international exchange set in the village countryside of Rotello, Italy. The festival would feature performances outdoors in different locations, from the medieval old town, to the chicken coop, the stairs that cut through the village, to the olive grove. The festival would also host workshops and through them create a performance for the end of the festival. Postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19 and revisioned for 2021, Stand Up Molise is an opportunity for us to gather to dance together after so long apart.
